French Horn Lessons

The French horn is a brass instrument. There are different kinds of French horns to choose from when making your decision to take French horn lessons. There is a single, Vienna, double, marching and triple French horns and they all offer you different sounds as well as different types of music you wish to play. All these French horns have valves that our French horn teachers will help you to get comfortable with in order to play well.

The single French horn is usually played for orchestra performances and has 3 to 4 valves. The French horn has pumpen valves instead of the traditional valves. It also has a larger bell flare so it produces a different type of sound. The triple or marching French horns are a bit lighter so they can be used for marching bands and they also produce different notes like the B flat and the F or E note. All these types offer different types of sounds and require different training. Our French horn teachers will aid you in investigating them to see what you are looking for as far as what type of sound and music you wish to produce.

In learning to play, our French horn teachers will stress your posture. In French horn lessons, you will learn to sit straight in the chair and have your neck muscles relaxed. If your neck muscles are tense, it will not allow the air flow necessary to produce a strong, steady note. You have to adjust the position of the horn rather than your posture when putting the instrument in your mouth. Lessons in French horn will also help you with your breathing which is also crucial because you must take deep breaths to fill up your lungs completely. Breathing is very important because it will allow you to produce long notes with the greatest of ease. You have to be able to exhale your air all the way through your instrument. This will come naturally for you once you practice and feel more comfortable playing. Your teacher will be able to watch these key points and give you pointers that you might not be aware of. Just the simplest adjustment can make all the difference in the world. Your teacher is trained to see what you might be lacking and with some changes you can produce wonderful music with the least amount of effort.

Learning the French horn requires time, discipline, and practice as with any instrument. It is an important part of any musical number and can produce a wonderful warm sound that can be recognized. Once learned and mastered, it can bring much enjoyment as well as confidence to the person playing it. It will be a wonderful accomplishment and a talent that will bring much enjoyment.
