Tuba Lessons

The Tuba is the largest of the bass wind instruments and even though it appears to be difficult to play, it really is not. It has such a distinctive deep brass sound that can be noticed in any marching band or orchestra setting. The tuba can be heard in ragtime music, jazz and of course any type of marching music. Many times there is only one tuba in a musical setting but one is all that is needed because it has such a presence.

The tuba should be looked at like any other type of brass instrument and in the course of tuba lessons, you will follow the same steps in learning how to play it. The only area of difference is the size of the instrument. It is a very large and heavy instrument and you must take this into consideration especially when transporting it because it cannot be broken down to a smaller size. The reason the tuba is so large, is because the size and the width of the tubing will determine the pitch and what type of sound will be produced. You can get a student size tuba when starting out, they are about 25% smaller in size but this could still be an issue for smaller children and adults.

Our tuba teachers will help you learn correct breathing control, embouchure and mouth formation are all important issues. I your tuba lessons, you will find that the sounds generated by the tuba are formed from the vibration of the lips on the opening of the instrument. The sounds will vary based on how much tension there are in the lips. These vibrations as well as the valves create the sounds. Our tuba teachers will instruct you that it is very important to practice your mouth/lip control so you can inhale slowly and deeply without puffing out your cheeks. Then you have to be able to release the air in a smooth manner that will produce the longest and fullest sound. If your child is interested in playing the tuba then lessons in tuba is the correct way to go. Our tuba teachers may suggest that you consider purchasing a mouth piece and letting the student get used it holding it in his/her mouth. They can slowly get used to inhaling and exhaling as well as trying to create a buzzing sound that would cause a vibration. This is much easier at the beginner level rather than dealing with the large instrument.

The tuba is not the most popular instrument, which can work to your advantage. The exposure you will receive from playing this type of instrument can come back to you in so many different ways. Exposure to bands, orchestras, and even colleges when thinking down the line for children can all be beneficial. This large beautiful instrument can certainly change so many different aspects of a child's or adult's life. It should simply be enjoyed!
